Amber Throne War planned
So Imagines and I have been bouncing ideas around for possible games to do over Skype. Dogs in the Vineyard came up which I am not happily predisposed to, but it does seem interesting. We have a game of PrimeTime Adventures on hiatus while one of our members goes through a busy time of life. One of the games I mentioned as a possibility was Amber DRPG. Rob wasn't entirely keen on the idea at first, so I sent him a copy of the rules. Well, he read through them, and got excited. hehehe

I am a huge Amber fan, and got some of my friends in high school involved with it, one so much that he sent details to the original artist of the Trumps in the DRPG book to have one done of his character from our game. So I have been wanting to do an Amber game again for a long time. I have very fond memories of my main Amber character, a son of Brand's that eventually brought about Brand's repentance. One who was very like Luke, his half-brother, and eventually became a master of the Logrus and Pattern, as well as a Trump artist in his own right. One who went from the high ideals of an Avalonian knight to the bitter paranoia typical of many elder Amberites. Traversing all of shadow, playing with starships from the UFP, delving into the deepest dungeons accompanied by Elminster (great story there), and coming through it all a better, stronger, and wholly different person than he went in. Byron is easily my most favorite character in any system, and it's that level of attachment, depth, and commitment to a character that I want to feel again.

Now Amber is mostly dead and gone as far as studio support. Chaosium games folded and Guardians of the Order were working on a new edition and that's the last anyone ever heard of it. So now it exists only in the hearts and minds of those who got to touch it, for however briefly, or those who can spend the $12 US at DriveThru RPG to get the core book.

Where does all this lead? I am glad you asked...

It leads to a Throne War. The Throne War is the most elemental of all Amber campaigns. It's also the fastest, and I believe and hope to test, the easiest over Skype. Here is an excerpt from my conversation with Imagines.

"Here is what I envisioned. A throne war. It's a fast game where it's dog eat dog, winner left standing gets crowned King of Amber. Lots of fun ensues. I planned to do the attribute auctions randomly and with blind bids. Some other things will be up for bid as well, and everyone will start with pattern, thus you all will be 150 point characters with 100 points for bidding purposes. The only contributions I will allow is Diary, Journal, Website(x1), Trump each worth 10 points. No more than 2 contributions from any one person.

As for who I envisioned playing, Me running it, You, Midus if she's a go, Rhiannon is interested, Sim if we can nail her down, and anyone else you might know that would be into playing. I was going to LJ about it and see if I can get some interested parties too. I wanted to try and get yeahgday involved as well but I don't think he's a go. Just too bsuy with new job.

And that's it. This is something that should be able to be completed in two, three sessions tops. First one for auction, character creation, and placement. Second session for majority of gameplay, third for end-game, wrap-up and discussion."

And there you have it. Now I am going to push for this to go ahead. Even if it comes down to only 2 or 3 players it will still go, because Amber is adaptable to that. I have done Amber with only one player, and had a blast doing it.

So, the call goes out. Any interested parties please respond here or via email.

Cheers!

Heh heh heh! Yeah, you got me.

Well, I've had some advice from a long-time Amber player on my blog to talk characters with you before I do anything else, so I'd say we'll have to hook up via Skype sometime. But I assume a three-session Throne War would need a fairly-tightly-focused politico, right? :-)

Yes. This isn't about sauntering through shadow, whiling away the hours finding some nice spots to party in. This is cut-throat, kill everyone else on your way to the throne, kinda stuff. Now Coalitions are acceptable generally, but since I don't know how many players we will have it may not be the best option. Would be short though.
